Your Heartburn
Stomach acid puts the burn in heartburn
When you eat, food goes from your mouth and throat into a tube called the esophagus. The food then travels down the esophagus into your stomach. Stomach acid then begins to break down your food.
Heartburn symptoms occur when stomach acid "refluxes" (flows back) into your esophagus.
Stomach acid is okay in the stomach. But in the esophagus, the acid may cause a burning sensation. Heartburn.
